What an AI Trading Copilot Should (and Shouldn’t) Do
AI & Trading · 4 min read

AI is everywhere in trading now, but not every tool marketed as “AI-powered” deserves your capital. Here’s a realistic line between where AI genuinely helps and where it shouldn’t operate alone — a distinction that matters more as more platforms rush to bolt AI features onto existing products.

02 · BAD USEFully automated decisions
03 · THE BALANCEAI proposes, you decide
01

Good use: pattern recognition and speed, at scale

AI excels at scanning charts, flagging technical setups, and processing breaking news far faster than any human could manually. This isn’t a fringe use case.

~75%

of spot FX volume is algorithmic trading. Bank for International Settlements, 2022 Triennial Survey.

AI-assisted trading is already the market’s baseline, not the exception, which means the real question isn’t whether to use it but how much decision-making authority to hand it.

02

Bad use: fully automated decisions without human oversight

Handing entry, position sizing, and exit decisions entirely to a black-box system removes the contextual judgment markets constantly demand — especially around news releases, thin liquidity, or unusual volatility that historical data didn’t anticipate.

A model trained on past conditions has no mechanism for recognizing when those conditions have fundamentally changed.

03

The right balance: AI proposes, you decide

The strongest setups pair AI-flagged opportunities with a final human check on risk exposure, current news, and whether the setup still makes sense right now. This division of labor plays to each side’s strength.

AI proposes

Speed and pattern detection. Scanning charts, flagging setups, processing news.

You decide

Context and judgment. Risk exposure, current news, and whether the setup still makes sense.

Conclusion

AI should make you faster and better informed — not replace your judgment entirely. Treat it as a copilot that assists the decision, never as the one making it, and revisit that boundary regularly as the tools keep improving.

AI is the copilot. You’re still the one flying.
