Demo vs Live Trading: What a Demo Can't Teach You
Trading Psychology · 3 min read

A profitable demo account feels like proof you’re ready. It isn’t — and the reason has nothing to do with strategy at all.

Demo accounts remove emotional weight entirely

Without real money on the line, fear and greed simply don’t activate the same way. Traders who follow their plan perfectly on demo often abandon it within days on a live account, not because the plan stopped working but because sticking to it suddenly feels much harder.

02

There’s a documented reason for this

Richard Thaler and Eric Johnson’s 1990 study “Gambling with the House Money” found people take significantly bigger risks with money that doesn’t yet feel fully “theirs.”

On a demo account, none of the money feels real at all — which is exactly why demo discipline evaporates the moment real capital is on the line, often within the first few trades.

03

What demo trading is actually good for

It’s excellent for learning the platform, testing a strategy’s logic, and building familiarity — just not for testing your own discipline under pressure, which is a separate skill that only live trading can actually train.

Conclusion

Use demo to learn the tool. Use a small live account to learn yourself — and expect that second lesson to take longer than the first.

Demo teaches the tool. Live teaches you.
